What is Sharesies?
Sharesies is an investment platform designed for people who don’t know a thing about shares or investing (a.k.a. MOST PEOPLE).
It’s an app where you login, deposit some cash in to your ‘wallet’, and then choose where to invest your money. Breaking into the world of shares and investments really couldn’t get any easier – especially if you have no idea where to begin!
How much does Sharesies cost? Are there fees?
Sharesies costs either $1-$3 a month, or $30 a year, based on your portfolio value. There are no other fees on top of that, all other fees are built in to the cost per share. If you sign up, you’ll get your first month free!
What’s the catch?
There are a limited selection of shares to choose from, but they’re index funds. Meaning that you aren’t buying shares for a single company, but for a bunch companies. Sharesies are always adding new funds to their portfolio, too.
Shares cost between $1-10 each, and there’s a minimum buy in of $5 at a time.
There are no other minimums or frequent contributions. It’s all up to you & how you want to spend your money. Plus, if you share your referral link with friends & family, you’ll get $5 credit every time one of them signs up to Sharesies.
How does it work, have you used it?
I sure have! I wanted to dabble in Sharesies before I started investing more seriously. So I dropped $50 into it and used my bonus welcome credit to invest $65 worth into shares.
Within 4 months I received my first dividend. It wasn’t much due to my small investment, but it was enough for me to see how Sharesies can help me to grow my money.
Depending on the funds you invest in, you could be paid dividends every other month!
Let’s take a look at the dashboard so you can get a feel for how it works.
1. Sign up
After you’ve signed up, click ‘buy’ and you’ll see all of the index funds available to invest in.
At a glance you can see each fund’s risk level. Here you can click on a fund to see what it is, how it’s performed, and how much it’ll cost.
2. Index info
Let’s look at NZ Mid Cap. You’ll see that it includes companies in the NZ Top 50.
Down the bottom it tells you how you can make money from this fund. You can sell your shares when they increase in value, and you’ll receive dividends twice a year.
Not all funds pay out dividends, so make sure you check!
In the pricing section you can see how the fund has performed over the last month, 3 months, 6 months, year, and 5 years.
The app also tells you how much the share price has increased or decreased over that time period.
In the last 5 years, the NZ Mid Cap share has risen by $2.02.
4. Risks & returns
In this section you’ll see how risky it is to invest in this particular fund. Sorted have a tool to help you understand your attitude to risk.
5. Buying shares
Here’s the nitty gritty of what you’re investing in. You’ll see that there are management fees, but they’re built into the share price.
So you won’t be paying anything extra.
Once you’ve decided how much to invest, click ‘add to cart’. If you’re done investing, click the cart icon and submit your order.
The order usually takes a day or so to be finalised.
Sharesies Review: Is it worth it?
Heck. Yes. The barrier to entry is so dang low. It’s $1-$3 a month or $30 a year. You have no excuse not to! PLUS you get your first month free.
Sharesies suggest investing $50 a week for a sizable return in the future. If that’s too much for you right now, try $20 a week. Build up your weekly investment after you’ve paid your debts & are earning more money.
